CSC’s Community Development Center (CODECE) assists Indigenous and Mexicano/Chicano communities in developing viable businesses that provide long-term economic opportunities while increasing quality of life and strengthening cultural lifeways.

Providing long-term economic security, protecting cultural practices and natural resources, and increasing the quality of life for families in New Mexico is a long-term goal for CODECE.

CODECE provides a full spectrum of business development resources and training to new and emerging community enterprises, including training in formal business incorporation processes, business and financial systems management, branding and marketing strategies, and other trainings to ensure long-term success.

FARMING

To date, CODECE has helped launch more than 70 farms and is currently providing support to farmers whose aggregate land and production value is approximately $56 million. CODECE has also provided critical trainings to nearly 300 Indigenous and Mexicano/Chicano farmers.

CODECE also assists farmers in acquiring start-up supplies and seeds, accessing land, equipment, and infrastructure as well as access to local markets. We have provided farmers with organic seeds, drip irrigation supplies, hoop house plastic covers, rainwater tanks, rototillers, and row covers.

CULTURAL TOURISM

CODECE’s other major business development areas include the creation of cultural tourism and agritourism businesses, artists’ collectives and other sustainable small businesses based on existing human, cultural and natural resources already in place in Indigenous and Mexicano/Chicano communities and enclaves. These emerging businesses are based on the principles of self-financing, use of existing resources and long-term access to identified markets.
